Sinus Lift Dublin – Sinus Augmentation | Lion Medical Tallaght
Sinus Lift Dublin – Sinus Augmentation at Lion Medical, Tallaght | Dublin 24
If you have been told you do not have enough bone in your upper jaw for dental implants, a sinus lift may be the solution. At Lion Medical Dental & Health Clinic in Tallaght, Dublin 24, our in-house specialist Dr Victor Vidigal (MSc Periodontology, MSc Implantology) performs both types of sinus lift procedures — giving patients across South Dublin, Rathfarnham, Knocklyon, Clondalkin and Citywest access to this advanced surgical service without lengthy referrals or travel to specialist-only centres.
What is a Sinus Lift?
A sinus lift — also known as sinus augmentation or maxillary sinus floor elevation — is a surgical procedure that adds bone to your upper jaw in the area of your back teeth (molars and premolars). The procedure involves gently lifting the sinus membrane and placing bone graft material into the space created, which over time integrates with your natural bone and creates a solid foundation for dental implants.
Sinus lifts are necessary when the upper jaw has insufficient bone height, most commonly because:
- Teeth have been missing for a long time, causing bone to resorb (shrink)
- The maxillary sinus is naturally large, leaving limited bone above the teeth
- Bone was lost due to periodontal (gum) disease
- Bone was lost following a previous extraction or infection
Types of Sinus Lift Available at Lion Medical
Dr Vidigal is experienced in both of the main sinus lift techniques:
Lateral Window Sinus Lift
The most established technique, used when there is minimal bone height remaining (typically less than 5mm). A small window is created in the side wall of the sinus, the membrane is gently lifted, and bone graft material is packed into the space. This approach allows for significant bone volume to be added and is highly predictable. Healing typically takes 6–9 months before implants can be placed.
Transcrestal (Osteotome) Sinus Lift
A less invasive technique, suitable when there is at least 5–6mm of bone remaining. The sinus floor is elevated from below through the implant site itself, and a smaller amount of bone graft is added. This approach is often combined with implant placement at the same time, reducing overall treatment time. Healing is typically shorter — around 3–6 months.
The most appropriate technique will be recommended by Dr Vidigal following a clinical assessment and review of your CBCT (cone beam) scan, which we carry out in-house at Lion Medical.
Sinus Lift with Dental Implants — Your Full Journey at Lion Medical
One of the biggest advantages of choosing Lion Medical for your sinus lift is that your complete implant journey can take place under one roof in Tallaght. Many Dublin dental practices refer sinus lift patients to hospital or specialist-only centres — which can mean long waiting times, multiple clinic locations, and fragmented care.
At Lion Medical, the process typically looks like this:
- Step 1: Consultation & CBCT Scan – Dr Vidigal assesses your bone volume and sinus anatomy using our in-house CBCT scanner and creates a personalised treatment plan
- Step 2: Sinus Lift Procedure – Performed under local anaesthesia at our Tallaght clinic, typically taking 1–2 hours
- Step 3: Healing Period – Bone graft matures and integrates (3–9 months depending on the technique used)
- Step 4: Implant Placement – Once sufficient bone has formed, implants (Neodent, Swiss-Brazilian) are placed
- Step 5: Crown Fitting – Final restoration is fitted, completing your new smile
Is a Sinus Lift Painful?
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the treatment. Mild swelling, bruising and discomfort in the days after the procedure are normal and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief and the care instructions provided. Most patients return to normal activities within a few days. Dr Vidigal and the Lion Medical team will guide you through aftercare in detail and are always available if you have concerns during your recovery.
